ASSORTED THINGS THAT I HAVE PICKED UP OVER THE LAST 20 OR SO YEARS SPENT RUMMAGING THROUGH PILES OF OTHER PEOPLES CRAP AT VARIOUS CAR BOOT SALES, SWAP MEETS, VIDE GRENIERS AND CHARITY SHOPS
EVEN THOUGH I PAID LITERALLY BUTTONS FOR THE TREASURES IN THIS LIST, IT IS NOT INTENDED AS A SNOBBY " I GOT SUMTHIN' FER NOTHIN'"CATALOGUE.THESE ITEMS ARE NOT NECESSARILLY VERY VALUABLE, IN REGULAR MONETARY TERMS…..IN FACT, TO THE MAJORITY OF FOLKS, IT'S A LOAD OF USELESS CRUD CLUTTERING UP THE HOUSE…..BUT I WOULD NOT PART WITH ANY OF THEM AT ANY PRICE….
THE LIST IS NOT ACTUALLY IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER…AND I COULD QUITE EASILY WRITE ANOTHER COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LIST NEXT WEEK….. I ALSO DECIDED NOT TO INCLUDE ANY OF THE DOZENS OF ACTION MEN/G.I. JOES AND HUNDREDS OF REALLY GREAT RECORDS THAT HAVE TURNED UP ALONG THE WAY
10: KANOA JAY ADAMS "FLY-AWAY" SKATEBOARD HELMET
FOUND AT HAYDOCK RACECOURSE BOOT SALE ,IN THE VERY LATE EIGHTIES. I'D DATE IT AROUND 1978. I ALWAYS WANTED ONE OF THESE WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD….AND NOW I HAVE ONE!! CAN'T REMEMBER HOW MUCH IT COST…BUT IT WON'T HAVE BEEN MUCH
FOUND IN A THRIFT STORE IN "OLD" LAS VEGAS IN 2001.
AN ORIGINAL "LONG BOX", WITH ANTHONY QUINN LIKENESS ON THE BOX ART. MISSING THE INSTRUCTIONS….BUT WHAT DO YA WANT FOR $1.69?
8: WHITE LEATHER PUNK JACKET
PICKED UP AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE BOOT SALE IN 1992-93. I THINK I PAID 4 QUID FOR THIS…..SOOPERKOOL!.....I ADDED THE STUDS AND BADGES MYSELF…..WISHED IT STILL FITTED ME!
3 COPIES OF THE BEST EVER HORROR FOLD-OUT POSTER MAGAZINE, DATED 1973.I USED TO BUY THIS AS A 9 YEAR OLD CHILD…I WOULD DISCREETLY COVER UP THE "FOR ADULTS ONLY" TAGLINE ACROSS THE CORNER WHEN HANDING OVER MY POCKET MONEY.
ISSUE 2 WAS ACTUALLY SEIZED AND DESTROYED BY THE POLICE UNDER THE OBSCENE PUBLICATIONS ACT .
I GAVE £5 , THREE YEARS AGO FOR THESE 3 ISSUES WHICH PROMPTED ME TO TRACK DOWN A FULL SET ON EBAY…..WHICH I WON FROM A GUY WHO IT TURNED OUT LIVED IN THE SAME TOWN AS ME AND BOUGHT HIS COPIES FROM THE VERY SAME NEWSAGENT AS ME 35 YEARS AGO!!
6: HACKS COUGH SWEETS TIN
.
PICKED THIS UP AT A VIDE GRENIER IN BRUSSELS. BELGIUM IN 2005
I PAID 5 EUROS, WHICH SOME MIGHT THINK IS A BIT STEEP FOR A CRAPPY OLD TIN…BUT I BELIEVE IT TO BE A PRICELESS THING OF BEAUTY.
FOUND THESE AT ST. HELENS BOOT SALE, AT LEAST 18 YEARS AGO…I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER PAYING 50 PENCE FOR 'EM….THEY HAVE BAGS OF CHARACTER AND ARE A PERFECT FIT. THEY HAVE STEEL TOE CAPS AND TO THIS DAY I HAVE NEVER CLEANED THEM.
4: VINTAGE "EVEROAK" MOTORCYCLE HELMET
I GOT THIS QUITE RECENTLY IN SPRING 2008, AT BURSCOUGH BOOT SALE FOR 15 POUNDS. ALSO INCLUDED WAS A PAIR OF BOXED STADIUM AVIATOR GOGGLES. I CHATTED TO THE SELLER AND HE THOUGHT THEY ARE FROM ABOUT 1965-66. THIS HELMET HAS A BRITISH STANDARDS KITE MARK SO IT'S ACTUALLY ROAD-LEGAL!! HE DIDN'T USE THE GOGGLES VERY MUCH, HENCE THEY ARE STILL IN THE BOX!
3: BLACK FLAG ALBUM ….. AUTOGRAPHED
"EVERYTHING WENT BLACK" ALBUM BY BLACK FLAG…..FOUND AT MORETON BOOT SALE IN 1992.
....ON INSPECTION, THE SLEEVE IS ACTUALLY AUTOGRAPHED BY THE BAND: GREG GINN, HENRY ROLLINS, DEZ CADENA AND BILL STEVENSON! THE PRICE?..... THE CONVERSATION WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS……
"HOW MUCH IS THIS?" I ASKED,
"THAT'S ONE POUND, LOVE" THE LADY REPLIED.
"BUT SOMEONES SCRIBBLED ALL OVER THE COVER!" I RETORTED,
"OK, HOW DOES 50 PENCE SOUND?...............SOLD!!!!!
2: VINTAGE "TON-UP BOY" BIKER BOOTS
THESE WERE FOUND IN A CHARITY SHOP IN BOURNEMOUTH IN DEC 2007.THEY ARE "MIKE HAILWOOD" SIGNATURE BOOTS BY TEX PRODUCTS, DATED 1963-64.
IF THE TRUTH BE KNOWN, THEY ARE JUST SLIGHTLY TOO SMALL FOR ME. I EVEN HAD 'EM STRETCHED AT A LOCAL COBBLERS…BUT IT MADE VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCETHEY COST ME £18.00 BUT I HAVE SINCE SEEN 'EM GO ON EBAY FOR £150 PLUS.
1: FURRY YELLOW MONKEY
TOP OF THE LIST IS MY FURRY, YELLOW TOY MONKEY COMPLETE WITH RED WAISTCOAT. I BOUGHT IT FOR 75 PENCE AT MORETON CAR BOOT SALE, THE WIRREL IN ABOUT 1992.
I REMEMBER SEEING SIMILAR, STANDARD "BROWN" TOY MONKEYS IN THE MID SEVENTIES, IN MY MUMS CATALOGUE- BUT I NEVER SAW THEN, OR HAVE SEEN SINCE, A BRIGHT YELLOW ONE!! TRULY BIZARRE!!
that white leather is amazing, i've been after one like that for ages you swine!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Hacks tin in a sweetshop when I was a very little girl (in England) , this would have been in the early sixties
